It is important to note that while centipede bites can be uncomfortable, they rarely pose a serious threat. Most individuals find relief from the pain and discomfort with over-the-counter pain medications and home remedies like applying a cold compress to the affected area. However, some individuals may experience additional symptoms such as headache, chest pain, heart tremors, nausea, and vomiting. These symptoms are usually indicative of an allergic reaction and require prompt medical attention, especially if the individual has a known insect allergy.
Where Do House Centipedes Live?
While centipede bites are rarely fatal, individuals with insect allergies may experience more severe reactions. It is also worth noting that untreated centipede bites can become infected, leading to further complications. Therefore, if you are concerned about a centipede bite, it is advisable to seek medical consultation for proper treatment. House centipedes, with their elongated bodies and many legs, are known for their swift movements and ability to capture prey.
Do House Centipede Bites Hurt?
Additionally, reducing humidity levels in your home can make it less attractive to house centipedes. While centipede bites are rarely fatal, they can be more severe for individuals with insect allergies. However, the venom of house centipedes is not strong enough to cause serious medical problems in humans.

The toxins are responsible for the inflammation and mild burning sensation we discussed earlier. Once again, those who are more sensitive to insect allergens might experience more irritation than most. So, it’s a good idea to seek medical attention if you experience an infection or serious reaction. Now, other centipede species are known to cause some pretty significant pain after a bite!
Additionally, maintaining proper humidity levels and avoiding conditions that attract these creatures into living spaces can help prevent infestations. Unless the person is experiencing a severe allergic reaction, medical attention is not usually necessary for a centipede bite. Some people may experience severe symptoms or allergic reactions from the centipede venom, but these occur only rarely. If you’re like most people, you’ll be able to care for a centipede bite at home, and you won’t have to get a medical professional involved.
The pain is often compared to a bee sting, accompanied by redness and swelling. Centipedes are found in areas of high moisture, such as loose bark, in rotting logs, under stones, in trash or piles of leaves and grass. When they invade homes, centipedes are most commonly found in damp basements, crawlspaces, bathrooms or potted plants. While cases of arthropods being lodged in the ear have been documented, instances of house centipedes specifically being lodged in the ear are rare. However, there have been reported cases of centipedes being found in the external auditory canal. In one such instance, a woman had a centipede lodged in her right external auditory canal, which caused both emotional and physical distress.
It has 15 pairs of legs, the last pair nearly twice the length of the body on adult females. The centipede goes through six larval molts and four adult molts before reaching maturity. Females can survive several years and produce up to 150 offspring.
How to Get Rid of House Centipedes
Learn whether or not there's cause for concern, beyond a mild case of the creeps due to all those legs. We are no longer supporting IE (Internet Explorer) as we strive to provide site experiences for browsers that support new web standards and security practices. Have you ever seen a many-legged creature scurrying so fast across the ground that you take a second look to make sure you actually saw it? Washing the area with soap and water immediately after exposure to the millipede toxin may help reduce symptoms.
Seal holes, cracks and gaps that enable outdoor centipedes to get inside a home. If handled roughly, some larger species can inflict a painful bite that can break human skin and cause pain and swelling, similar to a bee sting. The large Scolopendra can inflict a very painful bite and should be handled with great care.
The liquid causes a corrosive-like effect on the skin, and people may experience burning and redness in the affected area. Doctors can prescribe topical pain relievers and antibiotics if necessary. In cases of anaphylactic shock, clinical signs are likely to improve without long-term consequences if a person receives prompt treatment. Doctors may prescribe an epinephrine auto-injector and suggest avoiding centipedes.
Within your home, they provide efficient (and free) pest control services for you, as they feed on silverfish, firebrats, cockroaches, carpet beetles, and other household pests. If a house centipede were to bite a human, the effects would likely be minimal. Their venom is designed to incapacitate insects, not to harm larger creatures like humans.
Thankfully, centipedes consider insects their prey, not humans. But like many animals who feel threatened, centipedes can lash out when provoked. The most common is the Scutigera coleoptrata, otherwise known as the house centipede.

Australia House was widely acclaimed as a successful building and it remains the home of the Australian High Commission to this day. The model it presented at the time was replicated by Britain’s other leading colonial Dominions and territories. Nearby, on the same Aldwych island site, rose India House (1926–30), to designs by Herbert Baker. Not long after would appear South Africa House (1931–33), on Trafalgar Square, also designed by Baker (with Alexander Thomson Scott). Across from it, on the other side of Trafalgar Square, the Canadian government acquired the original premises of the Union Club and Royal College of Physicians, completing a refurbishment in 1925 to house the Canadian High Commission.

"It failed through youth [justice], children's services, through the court system [and] through the legislation that police have to work with." "But when we're talking about preventing the root causes and the drivers, we have to address those broader issues that sit outside the youth justice portfolio." According to Commissioner Lewis, the committee presented "an opportunity to overcome a real barrier to effective youth justice reform". "Politicisation is the greatest impediment to youth justice policy," Commissioner Natalie Lewis from Queensland's Family and Child Commission (QFCC) says. "When they are in our watch houses they are separated from adult prisoners and they're provided support through the Department of Youth Justice and other not-for-profit organisations," he said. "In some watch houses it's not physically possible to separate the adult inmates from the kids.
How the St James’s Park pelicans sparked a Cold War stand-off between Russia and the USA
As Australia had been six independent crown colonies before federation, a degree of rivalry existed between them. Indeed, even following political union, these states — as they became — jealously guarded their limited independence and sense of identity. This created a tension in the requirement of each state to be represented in the building, with their own office space. This was exacerbated by the fact that the government of Victoria already had its own premises at the south-west corner of the site (Victoria House), built in 1909. Tall and slender, this building was designed by Alfred Burr, with the assistance of Norman Shaw, in a heavily rusticated Baroque Classicism. It had been envisaged as the first instalment of a much larger building encompassing the other Australian states.

Bluey is created and written by Joe Brumm and produced by Emmy® Award-winning Ludo Studio for ABC KIDS (Australia) and co-commissioned by ABC Children’s and BBC Studios Kids & Family.
Those laws, combined with an already stretched justice system, set the stage for a perfect storm, Queensland's Human Rights Commissioner says. "When we focus on sensationalising youth crime, a lot of the discourse becomes dominated by tough on crime rhetoric. The state's response to youth offending has been thrust into the spotlight, with an ABC investigation revealing the repeated institutional failures that helped create one of the state's youngest killers. "But there are reasons why they're in the watch house and that's because of their criminality or their conduct," he said.
Home truths: TV’s Kevin McCloud thinks Australia should stop building such big houses - The Guardian
Home truths: TV’s Kevin McCloud thinks Australia should stop building such big houses.
The Constitution of Australia of 1900 established the House of Representatives in a newly federated Australia. Members of the House are elected from single member electorates (geographic districts, commonly referred to as "seats" but officially known as "Divisions of the Australian House of Representatives"). One vote, one value legislation requires all electorates to have approximately the same number of voters with a maximum 10% variation.

But, with a change of strategy, it presented something of a challenge, both politically and architecturally. Ultimately, the problem was solved by removing the existing gable and turret and remodelling the roof, enabling its seamless integration with the new and larger Australia House. A youth advocacy body is preparing to take legal action against the Queensland government for failing to protect young people in the state's watch houses. The House's well-established committee system is not always as prominent as the Senate committee system because of the frequent lack of Senate majority.

The architects’ goal was to create a building, ‘architecturally worthy of the headquarters of the Commonwealth in the capital of the Empire’. Being a newly independent Dominion, Australia was, indeed, keen to make its presence felt in the Imperial capital. The youthful nation believed it had much to offer and saw a magisterial piece of architecture as an effective way of advertising its importance to the continued primacy and economic prosperity of Greater Britain on the world stage. This was an entirely fitting aspiration, as the events of the First World War would prove. During 18 months of research and consultation, the Chau Chak Wing conducted surveys of the public’s tolerance for the display of mummified items. The findings helped shape the museum’s decision to remove the “disarticulated” body parts, including the foot, as offensive and tainted by colonialism.
Meet the dogs of Bluey
Queensland's youth justice system has been at a dangerous tipping point for years, with political leaders cracking down on youth offending through "tough on crime" approaches. Youth justice remains a highly vexed issue in Queensland, with both sides of the political spectrum keenly aware it will be a deciding factor in the looming state election. The completed building features wood and marble shipped from Australia and sculptures carved by an Australian artist, Harold Parker. Today, it is renowned as one of the finest remaining examples of early 20th century architecture in London, which has made it popular with film productions including Wonder Woman and the Harry Potter franchise. When the foundation stone was laid on the Strand in 1913, Australia was a newly minted nation with just five million people.
The Youth Advocacy Centre has written a scathing letter to the state, after a "summer of human rights abuses," as described by the state’s Human Rights Commissioner. Ms Hayes said the case would be based on specific cases of children who have suffered maltreatment. “Outdoor projects are heating up across Australia, in particular, we can see users want to undertake improvement around their entrance areas, with searches for ‘front door’ inspiration experiencing a 666% year-on-year upswing. “There is something to be said about a moody wash space, and we’ve noticed a growing number of ‘dark’ inspired spaces cropping up in homes on Houzz, with searches growing up by 294% more than the previous year.
The timber panelling, as with nearly all the timberwork in the building, comprises native Australian wood, in this case Moreton Bay chestnut (Castanospermum australe), prized for its swarthy and grained appearance. The interiors of the building are also characterised by extensive use of metal and bronze componentry, such as doors, windows and balustrading, including that on the stairs and around the rotunda. In the upper levels and on the stairs, extensive use has been made of the distinctive creamy-white marble from Angaston in South Australia.
"The detention centres are overflowing because the arrest numbers have increased. That overflows into the adult watch houses, which are designed to only hold adults overnight or two nights at most," she said. A major landmark on Strand, construction on the building by the Dove Brothers commenced in 1913, but shipping problems caused by World War I delayed completion. It was officially opened by King George V in a 1918 ceremony attended by the Australian Prime Minister William Morris Hughes. The Commonwealth of Australia’s chief architect, John Smith Murdoch, travelled to London to work with the Mackenzie firm on the building.
While the survey found that 79% of respondents had no issue with seeing human remains on display in museums, there were important caveats. These included that any remains on display should not be within one or two generations of museum visitors. The museum is moving away from using the word “mummy” in favour of phrases such as “Ancient Egyptian mummified human remains” and “Egyptian mummified remains”. Pitkin says the Chau Chak Wing Museum is leading the world in developing and implementing new protocols surrounding the presentation of Egyptian mummified human remains. The academic discourse has been going on for probably ten years, but for museums to implement changes it’s been a really slow process,” Pitkin says.
In 1910, he was appointed Australia’s first high commissioner in London, a position he held until 1916, when he won a seat in the British House of Commons and became the only Australian to sit in the colonial, Commonwealth and Imperial parliaments. King George V presented this walking stick to Sir George Reid on the laying of the foundation stone of Australia’s high commission in London. Often caricatured over his rotund stature, Reid relied on a walking stick, and this one bears signs of wear. While Australia House far exceeded the needs of a small nation when it was first built, by its peak in the 1960s-70s, during the post-war era of assisted migration, it was bursting at its seams with more than 1000 staff.
Sally Capp (above), former agent-general for Victoria, prepares to play host to guests in her offices in the adjoining building, Victoria House. The agents-general were once the official diplomatic representatives of the Australian colonies in the capital of the empire, but today they focus on promoting tourism and business interests. The metalwork emphasises the ‘French’ element of the design, broadly reflecting Louis XIV taste. It also provides further opportunity for ornament, with symbolism appropriate to the building’s purpose and meaning woven through.
The High Commission of Australia in London is the diplomatic mission of Australia in the United Kingdom. It is both Australia’s first diplomatic mission and the longest continuously occupied diplomatic mission in the United Kingdom. The Bluey phenomenon sees the show currently air in over 60 countries and is the most-watched children’s programme on U.S. streaming services 1(second only to Suits overall), with a soaring viewership of 43.9 billion minutes in 2023. The beloved animated series is also the number 1 kids show on Australian broadcast television and the most-watched series ever on ABC iview, and the number 1 show on CBeebies in the UK. The hit brand also has 5.7 billion lifetime views on its official Bluey YouTube channel. The grand, classical-style Australia House was one of the first buildings to be erected on the then vacant parcel of land between Aldwych and the Strand, the critical connecting road between the Parliament at Westminster and the City of London.
Gift from the King
This is most evident in the lavishly decorated Downer room, the hall named in honour of Mr Downer’s father, who also served as a High Commissioner. This crucial nation-building mission can still be seen today in physical form, literally built into the floors and walls of the unique semi-gothic looking design. But these modern dalliances with popular culture are far from the most interesting events that have defined the fascinating history of the oldest continuously occupied diplomatic mission in London. The Australian String Quartet practices for a concert hosted by the agent-general of South Australia; cultural outreach is another task performed by diplomatic missions overseas. The Exhibition Hall features nine chandeliers of Empire design, made in Milan using hand-cut Bohemian crystal.

The keen eye will also spot other flora and fauna indicative of the country, including grapes and pearls, not to mention the kangaroo and emu, which appear on the Australian coat of arms. Indeed, Australian plants and animals are found poking out from behind almost every corner. By the time of the building’s completion and official opening in August 1918, the fledgling nation of Australia had voluntarily answered the call of ‘King and Country’. Having made huge sacrifices towards the Allied victory, Australia had proven its loyalty and Australia House stood as a grandiose emblem of its steadfast allegiance.

The exterior of Australia House (Fig 3) is of Portland stone, on a base of light-grey trachyte from Mount Gibraltar in New South Wales. The tripartite division of rusticated lower section, rising through coupled giant-order columns, up to a strong entablature with projecting cornice, is topped with a mansard roof decorated with elaborately worked copper ridge caping and mouldings. As a whole, the ensemble makes for what was described in the architectural press at the time as a building ‘full of masculine strength and vitality’. The crux of the issue is the lack of international consistency in best practice around the display of human remains, Pitkin says.
India's Modi government operated 'nest of spies' in Australia before being disrupted by ASIO
Preparations for the construction of the building were soon underway, and the attempt to shape diverse aspirations into material form commenced. In August 1918, long before Parliament House opened in Canberra, Australia House stood proudly in the Strand. Accompanied by a flourish of trumpets, the King declared the stone ‘well and truly laid’ and, at Reid’s instigation, the crowd responded with cheers and a smattering of cooees. If a breach in court etiquette, the ardent applause and shouts were reportedly none the less welcome.

Opening directly above the vestibule area, on the first storey, is a glass-covered rotunda (Fig 4), drawing the eye up almost immediately as one enters the building. Apart from shedding light deep into the space beneath, this rotunda acts as a transitionary zone between the High Commissioner’s office (Fig 2), at the very front of the building, and the library-cum-conference room above the exhibition hall. The latter of these two spaces, stately in appearance, is large and quadrangular in shape. As in the hall beneath, it is decorated with Caleula marble columns, only this time in pilaster form with gilt capitals (Fig 6). The public concourse — including vestibule, main stair (Fig 5) and hall — was illustrative of the abundance and fecundity of this resource-rich land.

The award ceremony coincided with an unexpected extra episode of the show titled Surprise!. "Our beautiful country is a character in the show just as much as any of the dogs, so to have brought it into the living rooms of the whole world, encouraging people to come and visit is something I'll always be proud of," he said in a statement. As Bluey appeared out of Australia's oldest diplomatic mission, the beloved character was greeted to loud cheers and applause. Prior to the 1909 merger of the two non-Labor parties, a three-party system existed in the chamber, with a two-party system in place since. According to the Constitution, the powers of both Houses are nearly equal, with the consent of both Houses needed to pass legislation.[13] The difference mostly relates to taxation legislation. In practice, by convention, the person who can control a majority of votes in the lower house is invited by the governor-general to form the government. Bills appropriating money (supply bills) can only be introduced or amended in the lower house[13] and thus only the party with a majority in the lower house can govern. In the current Australian party system, this ensures that virtually all contentious votes are along party lines, and the government party usually has a majority in those votes in the lower house.
Domestic committees, which are responsible for administering aspects of the House's own affairs. These include the Selection Committee that determines how the House will deal with particular pieces of legislation and private members business and the Privileges Committee that deals with matters of parliamentary privilege. Scottish architects designed the Australia House building after winning an architectural competition. Alexander Marshal Mackenzie and Son were awarded the project by leading Australian artists – Arthur Streeton, John Longstaff, Fred Leist, George Lambert and Bertram Mackennal. Mackennal, an Australian sculptor and medallist, famous for designing the coinage and stamps bearing the likeness of George V, was also a judge for the architectural competition.
“These materials were transported to London while our boys were fighting on the Western Front,” former High Commissioner Mike Rann told the Telegraph. While Australia House is celebrated today, at the time of its construction the project was viewed by many as a white elephant which had blown out of all proportion, costing about a million pounds in the money of the day. “I think it would have been the equivalent of spending about £500 million today, on building an embassy building during a war,” Mr Downer said. The symbolism also continues outside, with six colonnades on the Strand side of the building each representing the Australian states. A bronze sculpture over the entrance of the god Apollo driving the horses of the sun - echoing the Rising Sun emblem worn by Australian soldiers in World War 1 - was designed by Australian sculptor Bertram Mackennal. It is an architectural jewel, London’s finest example of the belle époque style which flourished here briefly in that short span of time between the end of the Gothic revival and the blight of modernism.

A mummified head was also removed from the exhibition halls of the Chau Chak Wing Museum at Sydney University on the advice of the senior curator antiquities and archaeology, Melanie Pitkin. An unwrapped mummified foot in an old biscuit tin is among a small number of Ancient Egyptian body parts removed from display last month, as a Sydney museum grapples with the evolving ethics of museology.

The pairing of British and Australian materials on the exterior is carried through inside. As visitors enter the building, they are greeted by a magnificent, elongated vestibule (Fig 7), beyond which lies a large space that once served as an exhibition hall (Fig 1). Both spaces are lavishly decked in 1,200 tons of veined and mottled Australian marbles from Buchan in Gippsland, Victoria, and Caleula in New South Wales. G. As high commissioner, Reid was responsible for the construction of Australia’s first high commission. A dream of the newly federated Australian nation, it was expected to both promote the Australian Government’s aspirations and to confirm Australia’s place within London, the Empire and the world. Reid chose the name ‘Australia House’ because, he explained, ‘the word “House” carries with it the idea of a “home” for Australia in London’.
The government of the day and by extension the prime minister must achieve and maintain the confidence of this House in order to gain and remain in power. A trade agreement will be front and centre for Mr Downer’s replacement, former Australian attorney general George Brandis who is expected to take up the post before the Commonwealth Heads of Government (CHOGM) meeting on April 19. Since the opening of the mission, High Commissioners to London have traditionally been former cabinet members and prime ministers - a good indication of the post’s continued importance to Australia’s foreign relations objectives. The materials carefully selected and shipped across the world for the building include dove-coloured Buchan marble from Victoria, light and dark Caleula from New South Wales and white Angaston marble from South Australia. The timber in the joinery and flooring includes varieties from all Australian states, with the most prominent of these being black bean, a very hard and dense wood similar to English oak.
Kruger said firefighters rescued at least three residents, while several others leapt from their windows. An automatic sprinkler system, which is required under the city’s fire code, was not installed despite repeated warnings from the fire department ordering the property owners to install one. The city last year even threatened to revoke the license to operate as a rooming house for failing to comply with fire code. One person who lived on the third floor said that there were no sprinklers in the building at the time of the fire. A family member of one resident said that the hatch to the fire escape ladder was locked, forcing some to jump from the second-story wooden balcony. Fire investigators said the fire started in Room 205, located at the left rear of the second floor.
Organizations helping displaced residents
The Red Cross, Salvation Army and Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency are among the group supporting local efforts. The Fire Department was focused Wednesday on recovering any fatalities and quickly demolishing the unstable building. State police dogs worked the ground while drones hovered overhead to assist the demolition. "Anytime you can have a sprinkler system in the building, it's always better than having a building with no sprinkler system in it obviously," said New Bedford Fire Chief Scott Kruger. This breaking news story will be updated as more information becomes available.
Residents seen jumping out of windows to escape deadly fire at New Bedford rooming house
The Red Cross and Salvation Army Disaster Team were seen Tuesday night helping out residents, the station reported. The building was a 31-unit rooming house, with each unit locking individually and each floor sharing a common bathroom, according to residents. One of the victims was identified as 59-year-old Manual Moreira, who lived on the fourth floor. New Bedford fire Chief Scott Kruger said Tuesday afternoon that the first firefighters to arrive rescued several people from the windows of the building. “It’s hard because you have to try and account for all the people — the residents that are supposed to live there, people that had been in that building during the day visiting or just there and they’re not on paper.

Amaral said the city has connected those impacted with local agencies to assist them in their search for a new place to live. Josh Amaral, New Bedford’s director of housing and community development, told 12 News the city is doing everything in its power to help those impacted by the fire. Matos said her fiancé has been having recurring nightmares of escaping the flames, adding that he did everything in his power to get as many tenants to safety as he could.

Their body was found after investigators used heavy equipment to sort through debris and remove parts of the building, which partially collapsed. Authorities identified the man who died as Manuel Moreira, 59, who lived on the top floor of the four-story building, according to Bristol District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn III’s office. A second victim was recovered Wednesday from the rubble of a rooming house in New Bedford, where a massive fire the day before caused “catastrophic damage,” according to the state fire marshal’s office. Kruger said firefighters rescued at least three residents before they were forced to retreat as conditions worsened. More than two dozen tenants lived in the rooming house, according to Kruger.
The investigation into the cause of the fire continued Wednesday, as community members step in to help the residents displaced. A second body was found by firefighters combing through the rooming house partially destroyed in a massive fire in New Bedford, Massachusetts, fire officials said Wednesday. The size of the building and fire conditions made it difficult for first responders to determine who needed to be rescued first.
After a devastating fire, New Bedford is cracking down on rooming houses. Here's how.
Crews could not go into the building Wednesday because it’s structurally unsound, so they used demolition equipment to carefully remove parts of the building, and crews sorted through the debris to locate a person who was missing. Kruger said the first firefighters to arrive rescued several people jumping from the windows of the building. The four-floor building had 31 units and approximately 25 people are displaced, according to Kruger. According to a listing for the apartment building at Rosen Property Management, single- and double-occupancy rooms are rented on a weekly, biweekly or monthly basis.

Jason Gilmore leapt to safety from a second-floor fire escape with several other tenants. The fire chief said at least five tenants were injured in the fire, which quickly engulfed the building and shrouded the neighborhood in thick, black smoke. But despite the violation, the city licensing board granted the rotating cast listed as owners of the now-demolished building a “license to keep a lodging house” each year records were made available — most recently in May of 2022, according to city records.

Residents said that the building was under “mostly cosmetic” renovation, but that no work was being done on the property Tuesday. On Tuesday, New Bedford Fire Chief Scott Kruger said that five people were transported to local hospitals, with three in serious condition. No updates were provided on the condition of the hospitalized residents. After that, keeping them sheltered has been made possible by what Lima calls a "piecemeal" system dependent on day-today donations, and now an undisclosed amount of emergency funds from the city, originally given to New Bedford as federal pandemic assistance. In an April interview with The Standard-Times, Kruger shared the fire department's and city's plans to do a sweep of the city's rooming houses to check up on compliance statuses.
Of the two victims, one has been identified by the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office as 59-year-old Manuel Moreira, who lived on the fourth floor of the building. The other victim, who was found during excavation efforts on Wednesday, remains unidentified, the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services said in a press release. A deadly fire at a New Bedford rooming house Tuesday started accidentally, likely caused by a microwave or wall outlet, fire officials said Friday. The mayor and the fire chief stressed that, despite the barriers, the city would continue efforts to enforce fire code regulations in New Bedford’s rooming houses. The fire department closed its investigation last week after determining the fire likely started with a microwave, or the microwave’s wall outlet, on the building’s second floor. The lack of compliance with “sprinkler law” is a widespread issue in New Bedford’s rooming houses.
An engine company remained on scene to standby while a demolition contractor removed the remaining collapsed portions of the building and secured the area. One firefighter was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital for evaluation but is expected to be released Saturday, the fire department said. NBC affiliate WJAR reports he was suffering from dehydration and heat exhaustion. Shortly after a collapse zone was set up, the main building suffered a complete collapse, fire officials said.
Engulfed in flames, the building sustained catastrophic damage while firefighters succeeded in preventing the fire to extend to other homes in the area. Firefighters searched the building as conditions deteriorated, eventually finding Moreira. Demolition and excavation equipment was used to find the second victim by Wednesday afternoon, Boston.com reported.
The fire conditions in that building rapidly deteriorated, said Kruger. "That type of construction lends to that — lots of void spaces, lots of places for heat and smoke to build up,” according to a WCVB report. "The fire had control of that building when we arrived. There's no question about that, it was on all four floors. In the hallways. It actually burned through a stairwell when they were in there," said Kruger. The recovery came as investigators are using heavy equipment throughout the day to delayer and examine the badly damaged structure. Phillip MacDonald said that his brother and his brother's girlfriend lived in one of the building's units, right next to where the fire started.
When Sky5 flew over the four-story building Tuesday afternoon, firefighters were dousing the building with water from all sides. The water was pouring out from doors on the ground floor, but flames and heavy smoke continued. On Tuesday afternoon, he said at least five people were transported to the hospital, some with serious conditions.

Crews responded from New Bedford and surrounding towns, including firefighters from Acushnet, Dartmouth, and Fairhaven at the scene and ambulances from Freetown, Lakeville, Marion, Wareham, and Westport. Responding crews found heavy fire in the main wood frame structure that threatened to spread to several nearby buildings. Fire officials said a one-story commercial building just a few feet away and an unoccupied three-story wood frame building on another side both suffered minimal exposure damage. For the victims, not only is there the primary concern of finding a place to live, but there's also the myriad of other necessities often taken for granted. At a one-day resource recovery center, or RRC, organized by the city of New Bedford and the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency, the residents received help with things such as obtaining new copies of driver's licenses and more. Are New Bedford rooming house fire victims on a countdown to homelessness?
The building was well involved before firefighters arrived, and it sustained catastrophic damage, but firefighters were successful in keeping the blaze from extending to several nearby homes and businesses. But firefighters continued to extinguish hot spots for hours afterward and crews remained on scene overnight. One person was killed and five people were taken to the hospital in a massive fire at a rooming house in New Bedford Tuesday afternoon that drew scores of firefighters to the scene, officials said. "Our thoughts are still with the families who lost loved ones, the residents who were injured, and those who lost all their belongings," said New Bedford Fire Chief Scott Kruger. Residents were seen jumping out of windows to escape the blaze as firefighters arrived on scene. Heavy, dark smoke poured from the top three stories of the building, enveloping a full city block between Tallman and Holly Streets as the smoke drifted south.

It takes a lot of people to try to account for everyone," said Kruger early Wednesday morning of the challenges related to the building being a rooming house. Earlier, officials had said that a man was dead, another person was unaccounted for and several other people hurt in the massive blaze on Tuesday. But as workers dug through the wreckage with heavy equipment, they found the body of a person, the Office of the State Fire Marshal.

The city adopted the law requiring sprinkler systems in the high-occupancy buildings in 2013 and began enforcing the law after a five-year grace period in 2018. But as of this year, about two-thirds of the 33 buildings licensed by the city to operate as rooming houses currently fail to comply with that law, according to the fire department. NEW BEDFORD — This week's deadly rooming house fire was apparently started by a microwave or the wall outlet it was plugged into. It marks at least the fourth major fire in the last two years to devastate the tightly packed three-decker neighborhood. In April of 2021, two people died and more than 40 were displaced when a late night fire sparked in an alley between two buildings and set both on fire. The charred remains of that fire are less than one block away from the scene of Tuesday’s rooming house fire.
Investigators were able to rule out all potential causes except an accidental event involving a microwave in a second-floor apartment or the wall outlet it was plugged into, according to a press release. Five people were transported to the hospital Tuesday for injuries and smoke inhalation. Kruger also told the station that over two dozen people are now displaced and were put into motels for the night.
Firefighters established a “collapse zone” around the building with the possibility of the structure deteriorating further. A family member of one resident said that the hatch to the fire escape ladder was locked, causing some to jump from the second-story wooden balcony. He’s currently working with community organizations to help get everyone impacted back on their feet. Philip MacDonald’s brother is one of the roughly two dozen people displaced from the fire. There might be a few hot spots in the collapsed areas which is common,” Kruger said. New Bedford Fire Chief Scott Kruger said of the five people taken to the hospital, one was moved to Rhode Island Hospital.

But at the time of the fire, a “board or plank” was blocking the hatch to the fire escape, Chief Kruger confirmed.
