The Heyward-Washington garden is a hidden gem behind the enclosed, brick walls. 30-minute tours visit the Edmondston-Alston House’s public rooms and piazzas. Combination tickets with the Middleton Plantation, who manage tours of the house, are available. Tours of the house take around 30 minutes, and focus on the history of the family and architecture of the house, in the context of the social history of the period. Combination tickets to see the Heyward-Washington House and/or the Charleston Museum as well are available at a discount.

The restored property features early-19th-century and other antique furniture from the collection of the Charleston Museum, with gardens too restored to the style of the period. The bus departs from Lewes Bus Station and travels to Eastbourne via Ringmer, Glynde, Firle, Charleston driveway, Berwick and Alfriston – check out the timetable here . At the weekends, Cuckmere buses run the service, and travel all the way up to the farmhouse – perfect for families and visitors with limited mobility. Along with rare books (you can find an original Hogarth Press Virginia Woolf in the vintage section), the well stocked shop also carries goods sourced from Charleston’s gardens and postcard copies book covers of Woolf’s original titles designed by sister Vanessa Bell. A visit to the house is best done by going through the rooms with a docent who explains all the fine details of who made what (and who did whom) during the years that the unconventional couples who lived here produced art and life within its walls.
